Alaska (5/6)

These pictures were taken during our trip to Alaska by cruise ship from Seattle in July 2013.

Here are two bald eagles in their natural habitat. They are really quite common in Alaska. Another highlight for Mark of our birding trip was seeing a flock of migrating Sandhill Cranes (not shown here).

That afternoon, we visited the Russian bishop's palace with its functioning 1st floor chapel. Bishop Innocent arrived in 1841 to run his diocese of Alaska, Kamchatka and the Kuril islands. He was later appointed Metropolitan of Moscow - the top job - so had impressed both the locals and the hierarchy. Mouseover to see his china, from China.

Our cabin attendants were very attentive: this is Wally the whale. Mouseover for Seth the snake.

The next day we docked at 7am in Ketchikan and went on a forest walk with David, the guide in a red T-shirt, who admitted that when young he'd once eaten brown bear meat marinated in coca-cola and survived. You are looking at the roots of an immense fallen tree. Mouseover for a view of the smaller flora.

"Mark, the boat is leaving now, and the locals think vegans are appetisers".

Mouseover to see me in my lifejack .

Ketchikan has a park with original Tlingit totem-poles out of town, but we saw this replica in the centre. It has already caught two salmon so I'll keep my distance. Mouseover for an explanation .

Here is another replica totem pole. Mouseover for its explanation .

This is the Oosterdam's indoor pool and ice sculptor, and creation (mouseover for a close up).
