A Week In Central West Ireland (4/7)

These pictures come from our visit to the Irish Midlands and County Clare coast in April 2011.

This was the highest point of our circular walk around Inisheer. The island is the smallest of the three Aran Islands, the nearest to the mainland, and the second most populated.

After our return ferry crossing from Inisheer to Doolin, we drove to see the house used in the comedy show 'Father Ted' from the road. We didn't expect to return, but more of that later....

That evening we stayed at the very comfortable Corofin Country House B&B, and had a hearty meal at Bofey Quinn's pub, followed by excellent live Irish music.

After leaving Corofin the next morning, we visited the church remains at Kilnaboy outside which is this enigmatic round tower.

This is Kilnaboy church. Mouse over the picture to see the Sheela-na-gig (medieval fertility symbol) over the door.

A view from the church yard at Kilnaboy of the lush green pastures of the Emerald Isle.

Still on the Burren this was a similar ruined church between Kilnaboy and the Caherconnell stone fort.

Spring time flowers on the Burren.

Our next stop at the Caherconnell stone fort. Ring forts such as Caherconnell are thought to have been inhabited from 400-1200A.D. This one is very well preserved.
