A Week In South West Ireland (4/8)

These pictures were touring around the South West coast of Ireland in October 2004.

We stayed at a B&B about two miles east of Skibereen. We chose this one because it had a beautiful view of a lake and the wooded area beyond.

Having read the guide book for the area we back tracked east slightly and went through Leap to visit the Drombeg Stone Circle. This consists of 17 standing stones, surrounding a tomb, the remains of huts and an ancient stone cooking vat.

Red hot stones were rolled from the fire hearth into the vat of water. Using this method 70 gallons of water can be boiled for three hours, plenty of time to use it for cooking.

The foreground shows the remains of the two huts with the linking doorway.

A picture of the stone circle taken just before we ran back to the car to avoid the rain!.

We were impressed by the proliferation of Fuschias, many of which had grown so large they formed substantial hedges.

We drove across a bridge over the estuary to Union Hall, then south to a beach overlooking Rabbit Island and then on to Castletownshend which had a nice harbour. Here I took a picture of this traditional Irish telephone box. Position the mouse cursor on the picture to see me in a modern one.
