Mammal Watching in Speyside (9/9)

Here are some of my photographs taken on a mammal and bird watching holiday in Scotland near Aviemore with Speyside Wildlife during August 2006.

Since we were driving back from Scotland we took advantage of this to call in at various places along the way including the Falkirk Wheel that claims to be the world's first and only rotating boat lift.

This remarkable piece of engineering replaces several waterway locks by raising boats from a lower canal to an upper canal by rotating through 180 degrees in just a few minutes. Place the mouse cursor on the picture to see it rotated to a different angle. There is a visitor centre and organised boat trips for visitors who wish to ride up in the wheel, travel a little way along the upper canal and then return back down again.

Our journey continued through Scotland where we drove past Chapelcross power station. There is no steam from the cooling towers because this nuclear power station was closed in 2004 and is now being decommissioned.

We stayed at a B&B near Bradford on the Saturday night and visited the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television. There we found they had recently opened a new gallery called Experience TV explaining the history of television. For me the most interesting section was about the pioneers of television. The display included the equipment John Logie Baird used to demonstrate television to the public for the very first time (place the mouse cursor on the picture to see it).

Before our final leg of the journey home I said hello to this rather familiar character from British television in the entrance to the museum.

Thank you for looking at the pictures from our mammal watching trip in Scotland.
