Northern Scotland and the Orkneys (6/7)

Here are some of my photographs taken during a visit to the North of Scotland and the Orkneys at the end of August 2000.

We then drove to the RSPB Forsinard reserve. Part of this site has been laid out with stones to make it easier to walk around the bog areas without causing damage.

Bog land is mainly moss and low on nutrients. These Sundew plants supplement their diet by trapping insects on the ends of red sticky hairs and digesting them.

We continued the walk beyond the RSPB reserve and enjoyed the vast open space.

We stayed overnight in Tongue. The walk to Tongue castle was very pleasant crossing the river and passing reed beds used for waste water treatment. However it was very up-hill, especially on the last stretch, and it felt good to sit down and rest when we finally got there. Being so high up the view was excellent.

We continued west to Smoo cave. During the summer holiday season boat trips are arranged through the cave but these had finished when we arrived at the start of September. However the place is very interesting to walk around and see the waterfall inside the cave.
