Istanbul (5/6)

At the end of May 2002 I had the chance of a short break in Istanbul. This was my first visit to Turkey.

Another view of some of the pillars in the cistern.

Later we crossed by ferry to the Asian side of the Bosphorus, to a district called Uskudar. From here we could see the Maiden's Tower (Kiz Kulesi) on a small island.

Here Mark is negotiating with a shoe shine boy to have his shoes cleaned. He did such a good job Mark made him a (lira) millionaire.

The final morning before flying home we traveled by tram to the ferry terminal, walked over the bridge and then took this small train called the Tunel up the steep hill on the other side. Opened in 1875 this is the world's oldest (and perhaps shortest) underground railway. The journey time is about 90 seconds but saves a lot of uphill walking.

The entrance hall at the lower end of the Tunel is very nicely decorated.
