A friend invited us to stay at his holiday home in Umbria during June 2003.

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

The painter Raphael is buried here in the Pantheon as are two kings of Italy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here is the bridge over the River Tiber to Castel Sant Angelo, the stronghold of popes since the middle ages.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is just inside Saint Peter's Square in the Vatican, looking at the Basilica.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here I am standing in front of Saint Peter's Basilica built in the sixteenth century but I'm looking much younger. Its design was by an architect called Donato Bramante but the building was largely completed by a young artist from Florence called Michelangelo.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Michelangelo also designed the magnificent dome.
