Northern Scotland and the Orkneys (5/7)
Here are some of my photographs taken during a visit to the North of Scotland and the Orkneys at the end of August 2000.
During the second world war Italian prisoners of war were kept on the island. They were allowed to build their own chapel which was constructed from two nissan huts placed end to end.
The chapel inside is brightly decorated and well worth visiting.
A picture of the remains of a sunken ship taken on the final leg of the coach journey back to the boat to John O'Groats. Many more sunken ships are below the water level.
The following day we headed west again and visited the Cairns of Dounreay. Here Mark has found the footpath to take us there.
These Cairns did not have access inside but were like small hills. Climbing to the top of them did however provide a good view of the Dounreay site in the distance.
