Russian Waterways Cruise (4/7)

These pictures were taken during our cruise along the waterways of Russia from Moscow to Saint Petersburg in July and August 1998.

We were invited up to the bridge of our ship, the Alexei Surkov, for a tour.

Next stop was Kizhi Island which is only about 1km wide and 7km long. Its main tourist feature is an open air museum of wooden buildings. Here I am with a wooden windmill in the distance.

Here are two of the local girls making craft items such as bead necklaces.

We were shown two churches, both wooden structures. This is inside the smaller which is used in winter becasue it is easier to heat. It is decorated with a large number of religious icons.

The second church is much grander and used in the summer. We could not go in but it certainly looks impressive from the outside. The guide told us that according to legend it was built by just one man with an axe. He cut down the trees required to build it but used no nails or other fixings. However during restoration such fixings have been added.
