Russian Waterways Cruise (5/7)

These pictures were taken during our cruise along the waterways of Russia from Moscow to Saint Petersburg in July and August 1998.

Our next stop, close to Karelia, gave us the opportunity to visit a small rural town where we were invited into local people's homes to see how they lived.

This is the wooden house we visited, typical of the area.

The lady who owns the house is in the middle. She offered us tea from the traditional samovar on the table. The other two ladies were part of our tour group - you can see from the way they are dressed that it was raining and a relief to go indoors!

Next we visited Karelia's regional museum in Petrozavodsk. This is an impressive model of a famous ship but we can't remember which. I think it may be Captain James Cook's Endeavour but if anybody knows for sure let me know, but it went on an Arctic voyage of discovery.

This statue in Petrozavodsk city centre shows Marx and Engels in conversation. To the right is one of the city trams.
