Russian Waterways Cruise (6/7)

These pictures were taken during our cruise along the waterways of Russia from Moscow to Saint Petersburg in July and August 1998.

Still in Petrozavodsk, we went to the theatre to see Kantele, one of the oldest song and dance groups in Russia having been formed over sixty years ago. It was a very enjoyable performance of Karelian music and is similar to that of Finland and Estonia.

Although we went ashore almost every day, we did spend quite a lot of time on the ship. Here is our cabin which was comfortable and quite spacious with, most importantly, Russian Baltika beer! (Not shown, Georgian Champagne in our little fridge)

On the Thursday evening we were 'roped in' to performing in the passengers' show. With just 45 minutes to practise we became Volga boatmen singing in Russian about our toils.

At the end of our ship's journey we arrived in Saint Petersburg. Here is Mark outside Smolny cathedral.

By the river is Peter and Paul's Fortress. This was very busy with tourists, in part because remains of the Romanovs had recently been found in Ekaterinburg, the Urals city where they were executed, and placed in the room shown here.
